Brazilian Bee Researchers Visit Australia to Collaborate on Queen Bee Rearing Techniques

Biomonitoring International recently brought Prof Dejair Message and Dr Isabel Christina da Silva to Australia to collaborate with Dr Maze’ Majer in a queen bee rearing venture. This is of importance in view of the growing interest in bee keeping in this country and also the need to increase the productivity of honey and other bee-products, as well as the genetic resistance to different diseases.

The fieldwork was performed on a small-holding near Gingin and was successful in rearing individual queens ready for establishing new colonies. It is anticipated that the expertise gained from the visitors will enhance our ability to efficiently rear hive-ready queens. Individual queens are worth $30-50, so this venture also has important economic implications.
